The UK has lost 97% of its meadowland since the 1930s - 7.5 million acres or an area the size of Wales. 1,400 species of insects need wildflowers and other meadow plants for survival, as well as birds, mammals and other wildlife that keeps our ecosystem thriving.

Giving pollinators a home
We need pollinators such as bees, butterflies and other insects for food production as 70% of our crops require pollination. Just a square metre of meadowland can be home to up to 500 wildflowers, provide food for life for 12 bees, and takes 3kg of carbon out of the atmosphere.

Protecting our land
The land we plant on is protected and managed by My Square Metre for 30 years, afterwards it either remains fully established meadowland, used for innovative green agriculture projects or other sustainable projects. The land is continually surveyed and monitored, this data is shared with other environmental organisations to help with their efforts.
